Munich (dpa / lby) - After bottles were thrown at police officers in the English Garden, the police want to increase their presence in the large Munich park.

"It's a question of social control," said the Vice President of the Munich Police Headquarters, Michael Dibowski, on Monday.

"We will increasingly show our presence in the English Garden."

He did not name numbers of how many police officers should patrol there in the future.

Dibowski had led the operation, which made headlines at the weekend.

According to him, police officers had been called into the park for a fight.

There it turned out that the reason for the brawl was a sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl.

The "event audience" in the park then not only tried to prevent the officers from doing their work, but also attacked them.

"It's no longer fun that you want to protect a sex offender rather than help that he is recognized," said Dibowski.

According to the Bureau, 19 police officers were slightly injured during the operation on Saturday, and around 50 bottles are said to have flown.

"My colleagues who wanted to help in this situation and had to prosecute a criminal offense were attacked with numerous bottles thrown by many bystanders," criticized the police vice-president.

"The dynamic that has developed in the Englischer Garten affects me deeply."

Six adolescents and young men between the ages of 15 and 20 were charged with dangerous bodily harm, resistance and assault against law enforcement officers as well as violation of the peace.

The police used pepper spray and batons during the operation.

According to a spokesman, however, the Presidium has no knowledge of injured persons.

Some of the park visitors may have assumed that it was a mission to enforce the corona distance rules.

"I don't know if there was any misunderstanding," said Dibowski.

Even if it had been a Corona mission, “that does not justify throwing bottles at police officers”.
