Mainz (dpa / lrs) - A vaccination against pneumococci, which can cause pneumonia, among other things, has become much more popular with older people in Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the first half of 2020, around five times as many people over the age of 60 insured with Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) were vaccinated against pneumococci as in the same period in 2019. TK announced this on Monday.

According to this, 6.2 percent of insured persons aged 60 and over had themselves immunized against the bacteria in the first half of 2020.

A year earlier it was only 1.2 percent in the same period.

At the beginning of the corona pandemic last year, the Ministry of Health reportedly advised older people to be vaccinated in order to avoid serious disease courses.

The proportion of those vaccinated was highest in the group of 70 to 79 year olds, it said.

7.4 percent of them were immunized against pneumococci in the first half of 2020.

Nationwide, the vaccination rate among TK insured persons aged 60 and over rose from 1.7 to 6.6 percent, according to the information.
