Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - According to Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), the strict nationwide corona rules have given the AfD an influx of people in the state election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.

"The federal emergency brake has brought a boost for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt," said Haseloff of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (Tuesday).

"Before the law on the federal emergency brake, the surveys for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt were three percentage points worse than after the law."

Polls for the state elections on June 6, the AfD had last seen between 20 and 24 percent, the CDU at 26 to 27 percent.

"There were times in the pandemic when things were going well when the CDU was 15 percentage points ahead of the AfD," said Haseloff, who is again running as the top candidate for the CDU.

The federal emergency brake has led to a lot of frustration in Saxony-Anhalt.

The current President of the Bundesrat again criticized the fact that the Chamber of States was only informally involved in the decision on the nationwide regulations.

Germany only got through the pandemic very well in an international comparison thanks to the cooperation between the federal and state governments.

"And if we now see positive developments, it is the result of measures that existed long before the federal emergency brake," said Haseloff.
