Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The cross-border bus route X2 between Bad Belzig and Lutherstadt Wittenberg opened on Monday.

The first bus on the line in Bad Belzig in the direction of Wittenberg left at 5 a.m., said Hans-Jürgen Hennig, Managing Director of Regiobus Potsdam Mittelmark, at a digital opening event on Monday.

The X2 connects Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt with Bad Belzig in Brandenburg every hour on weekdays and every two hours on weekends.

"We need cross-border and reliable connections," said Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU).

The line creates a bit more unity between Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg.

Not only commuters and trainees benefit from the connection, but also tourists and residents, as the bus creates a direct connection to the ICE connection in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, said Hennig.

With the new bus line "we are contributing to the economic success of the region, increasing the attractiveness of climate-friendly public transport and taking another important step on the way to the mobility transition," added Guido Beermann, Brandenburg's Minister for Infrastructure and State Planning.
