Norderney (dpa / lni) - Before power cables were laid to an offshore wind farm in the North Sea, ten explosive devices from the Second World War were detonated in a controlled manner on a sandbank between the islands of Norderney and Juist.

A spokesman for the Tennet company, which is responsible for connecting offshore wind farms in the North Sea, announced on Monday evening that it was artillery shells.

The area was cordoned off at the time the duds were detonated and sailors and water sports enthusiasts were asked to avoid the area between the two islands.

The old ammunition had to be rendered harmless in order to ensure a secure foundation for the cable route.

Two explosions are still pending.

These are a sea mine and a torpedo.
