Berlin (dpa) - The Berlinale is sticking to its plans to organize a film festival in the summer despite the pandemic.

Film screenings outside are planned for June.

Visitors should need a negative corona test or a complete vaccination certificate, as managing director Mariette Rissenbeek said on Monday.

Along with Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the world's major film festivals.

Because of the spread of the corona virus, the festival management had to reschedule.

The film festival was divided into two dates.

A digital industry get-together took place in March; in a second step, films are now to be shown to the public.

The summer edition is planned for June 9th to 20th.

The Berlinale wants to apply to the Berlin state government to become a pilot project.

Because not only museums and theaters, but also open-air cinemas are still closed in the capital.

In addition, there is a curfew at night due to the nationwide emergency brake.

The plans for the Berlinale depend on the seven-day incidence.

The value indicates how many new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded within seven days.

Politicians have set a threshold value at 100 - if the incidence value falls below this, more freedom should be possible again.

In Berlin, the value on Friday had slipped to 98.6 for a long time, but according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) it was back at 100.8 on Monday.

The incidence will have to stay below 100 for a few days so that they have the opportunity to greet their audience, said Rissenbeek of the German press agency.

Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) said on Monday morning on rbb-Inforadio about the Berlinale that this would have to be decided in the next few days because the organizers needed planning security. There is now federal legislation that they have to adhere to. The freedom they had before to enable something regionally adapted via model projects is now limited, said Müller.

"We are in constant coordination with the Berlin Senate," said Rissenbeek.

You would now submit your concept.

It would take a few days for them to clarify.

Even if her application for an open-air Berlinale were approved in principle, there was still the question of how the incidence would develop.

Rissenbeek was optimistic: "We are also sure that the audience would be happy if they could see films on the screen again."

Events are planned at 16 locations, for example on Museum Island, at the Kulturforum or in Friedrichshain.

According to Rissenbeek, around 60,000 tickets could be offered, depending on the regulations.

Last year around 330,000 tickets were sold.

At the time, the Berlinale was one of the last major events that had taken place before the lockdown.

According to current plans, the summer edition is to be officially opened on June 9th.

The winners, who were announced in March, are due to receive their awards on June 13th.

The Golden Bear for the best film goes to the experimental satire "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn" by the Romanian director Radu Jude.

But which filmmakers could even come?

It can be assumed that all those responsible for the premieres for European films could arrive, said Rissenbeek.

When traveling overseas, there would be bigger hurdles.

The program for the Summer Special should be published on May 20th.

Advance sales are scheduled to begin on May 27, and tickets could cost between 11 and 13 euros.

There is a comprehensive film program, said Rissenbeek.

The fact that the Berlinale could sell significantly fewer tickets than usual also means less income.

State Minister for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) has promised them support from the “Neustart Kultur” program, said Rissenbeek, who runs the festival with the artistic director Carlo Chatrian.

At the same time, they could have saved costs at various points.
