Starnberger See (dpa / lby) - Because he wanted to save his companion's dog, a man almost drowned in Starnberger See.

The 32-year-old was traveling in a motor boat with a 29-year-old when the young woman's dog fell into the water, the police said.

The man then jumped into the 11.5 degrees cold water to save the animal.

But he was no longer able to get back on the boat.

A patrol boat of the Starnberg water police became aware of the trio shortly afterwards.

At the time, the 32-year-old was already severely hypothermic and so exhausted that the woman had to lean over the ship's side and hold his head so that he wouldn't go under.

The officers brought the man with a lifebuoy on board the patrol boat, where they gave him first aid.

He was then taken to a hospital.

Even the dog got away with the fright - its owner finally managed to pull him onto her motorboat.
