The virologist Christian Drosten has shown himself confident about the course of the corona pandemic in the summer.

“The summer can be quite good in Germany,” said Drosten on Sunday evening in the ZDF “heute journal”.

When asked about vacation, outdoor dining and barbecuing with friends, he explained that many things can be allowed outside, especially in the outdoor area.

"I think that in June we will see effects that can be ascribed to the vaccination for the first time," said Drosten.

The current relaxation is "probably" still due to responsible behavior of the population.

At the same time, the director of the Institute for Virology at the Berlin Charité warned against too early euphoria.

Germany is not yet as advanced as other countries, said Drosten.

"We have to wait longer because we are not that far with our vaccination progress." While in Great Britain more than 50 percent of the total population is vaccinated, there are 32 percent first vaccinations in Germany, not even ten percent are fully vaccinated.

For the autumn, herd immunity will improve the situation in Germany, Drosten was confident.

The disease will not have disappeared in autumn, but it will not spread uncontrollably.

What is required among adults is "a very high vaccination rate" against the virus.

Those who were not vaccinated would then continue to have “full risk of becoming infected”.

It is "very good that we can now vaccinate children over twelve," said Drosten.

If rare, severe Covid-19 sequelae occur in children, the younger children would also have to be vaccinated, said Drosten.

However, he said, studies on vaccinating young children are complicated and take time.

"I'm not so sure whether you can vaccinate younger children so quickly," said Drosten.
