Kiel (dpa / lno) - According to the Schleswig-Holstein SPD state chairman Serpil Midyatli, the health system in Germany urgently needs to be reformed.

"We will put the system of flat rates to the test, revise the flat rates and, where necessary, abolish them," said Midyatli of the German press agency.

"In our opinion, public hospitals should play a central role in strengthening the common good."

The flat rates per case would not do justice to the individual needs of children and young people.

"That is why the financing of pediatric and adolescent medicine has to be restructured."

The goal is a health system in which the needs of the people are the focus and in which everyone gets what they need, said Midyatli, who is also the SPD federal vice-president. "Hospitals are not investment objects, but public services of general interest." The clinics would have shown how powerful they are in a pandemic. After the introduction of the flat rate per case, however, undesirable developments became apparent. The hospitals bill the treatment of patients using flat rates per case. Depending on the illness and type of treatment, there is a certain amount with which all personnel and material costs are covered.

Midyatli said that additional work was not adequately reflected in the existing system.

A reform of hospital financing is therefore essential.

The health system must also be prepared for future pandemics.

"Reserve capacities and the appropriate personnel must be available and financed for emergencies."

The dismantling of intensive care beds should be stopped.

There is also an urgent need for higher remuneration for basic services, simple births and for emergency care.

In an area like Schleswig-Holstein in particular, the distances should not be unreasonably long, even for simple health needs.
