<Reporter> On a

Saturday afternoon, New York Times Square is crowded with people, and people who are terrified by a sudden heard gunfire run hand in hand and run into a mess, and the police who were waiting nearby soon flock to the scene.

[Witness: We were about 60 meters away from the shooting site. I was sitting, and suddenly I heard gunshots, and people just started running in the opposite direction. We just ran and found a place to hide nearby.] As you can see,

Times Square, where the most people gather in New York City, was emptied right after the incident, as the police line was struck and access was controlled.

A police investigation revealed that while four men were arguing on the street, one suddenly pulled a gun and fired, and three nearby pedestrians, including a 23-year-old woman and a 4-year-old girl, were shot.

[Dermott Shea/New York Police Commissioner: A four-year-old child underwent surgery. She's a very brave girl, and she was shot while buying a toy.]

All of the victims were

shot in the

legs and feet, and it was known that life was not affected.

Citizens were in shock.

[New Yorkers: Times Square is one of the safest places in New York City.

But this happened.

Now I don't feel safe anywhere.

This happened even though the police were nearby.

This is the first time I've ever seen an incident like this happen.] The

police released a picture of a suspect who had fled from the scene and started pursuing it.
