Schwerin (dpa / mv) - More than every second foreigner living in Mecklenburg-Vorpmmern has a passport from a European state.

The State Statistical Office points this out on the occasion of Europe Day, which is celebrated on Sunday (May 9th).

Last year, 46 905 European foreigners lived in the northeast, four percent more than a year earlier.

According to the office, the central register of foreigners counted a total of 81,735 foreign citizens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania last year.

That is around five percent of the total population.

Most European foreigners in MV come from Poland with around 14,900 people, followed at some distance by Romanians (4860).

Almost 4,000 people living in MV had a Russian passport and a Ukrainian 3845.

Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950. At that time, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech in Paris about his vision of a new political cooperation in Europe that would prevent wars between states.

Schuman's proposal is seen as laying the foundation stone for the European Union.
