Dresden (dpa / sn) - Since the beginning of May, the second pastor's position at the Dresden Frauenkirche has been occupied again.

During the Sunday service, Markus Engelhardt is introduced to office by the superintendent of the Dresden Mitte church district, Christian Behr.

The theologian, who comes from Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg), was appointed by the Saxon regional church at the end of 2020.

The corona-related limited presence service on a small scale, in which the 59-year-old preaches in a new role for the first time, is broadcast via live stream.

He is the successor to Sebastian Feydt, who has been superintendent of the Leipzig church district since autumn 2020.

Engelhardt grew up in a pastor's family in Heidelberg and studied in Bern (Switzerland), Erlangen and Tübingen. His first pastor's position was in Konstanz on Lake Constance, and in 2007 he was elected dean of the Freiburg city parish. He is married to a pastor who will continue to work for the Baden regional church.

The Dresden Frauenkirche, built in the 18th century, was destroyed in February 1945 and rebuilt after 1990 with the help of donations from all over the world.

It is a symbol of peace and reconciliation and has no church of its own, but connects people from near and far anew every day in devotion and prayer.

In addition to the peace and reconciliation work, the Frauenkirche is also a place of socio-political discourse and a rich musical life.

Since the end of 2016, Angelika Behnke has for the first time been a pastor at the prominent church.
