Copenhagen (dpa) - In Denmark, around 50 people were infected with a corona variant that was first discovered in Mexico.

It is the largest outbreak of this variant in the northern European country, said the national authority for patient protection on Saturday after a report by the Ritzau news agency.

The infected are mainly staff and guests of a restaurant in the Nordsjaelland area north of the capital Copenhagen.

The authorities did not classify the outbreak as particularly dangerous.

How the variant known from Mexico came to Denmark is not yet known.

In March, the government and parliament agreed on a comprehensive opening plan designed to gradually reduce restrictions on public life.

So far, almost 1.5 million people in the EU country have received their first corona vaccination - around a quarter of the population.

800,000 people have the second dose necessary for full protection.
