Berlin (AP) - Christian Gentner will leave the Bundesliga soccer club 1. FC Union Berlin after the season.

«Together with my family, I have decided to break new ground again this summer.

Now it's about enjoying the last games in the Union jersey and bringing this great season to an end in the best possible way, ”said the midfielder in a message from the club.

The 35-year-old moved to Berlin in 2019 from VfB Stuttgart, who had failed in relegation to Union.

Neither the players nor the club announced where Gentner was headed.

The five-time national player, who became German champions with both Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg, has made 20 appearances for the iron this season.

In his career he played 428 times in the Bundesliga and scored 46 goals.

"We respect this joint decision, wish him all the best and thank him for the fact that Christian and his family, despite many skeptics at the beginning, had the courage to take this path with Union," said Oliver Ruhnert, Managing Director of Professional Football.

Christopher Lenz had previously announced his departure from Union.

The defender will play for Eintracht Frankfurt from the coming season.
