"The feeling of being abandoned"

"The police really have the feeling of being abandoned", laments Denis Jacob of Alternative Police-Unsa, at the microphone of Europe 1. He evokes tired troops, at the end of their rope. His union will be present in Avignon for the tribute to Eric Masson, but also to push the government to act. "The statements, we keep hearing them. There is always support, but no act. There is a certain weariness. We need a strong sign from the President of the Republic. It must go through concrete actions, "he continues.

"There is a lot of anger because there is a general atmosphere of disintegration, of violence against the police, whether on social networks or on certain media. [...] The daily attacks continue and the violence is increasing", supports Patrice Ribeiro, general secretary of the Synergie Officiers union.

Floor sentences called for

A lead was issued on Saturday by Emmanuel Macron: "We must continue to move forward so that the criminal response meets the reality of society and its evolution," said the President of the Republic. This is indeed a priority according to David Le Bars, secretary general of the Union of Police Commissioners: "A police murderer must be treated differently from any other delinquent. There are symbols that we do not touch in the Republic". For the trade unionist, "there are not enough firm measures for those who commit the irreparable".

"We want measures which are imposed at the highest level of the State and which make it possible to protect the police, that is to say minimum sentences, sentences which are not adaptable and that whoever takes it to a police officer, a firefighter or an elected official be automatically sanctioned. We cannot have these processes of exaggeration which are multiplying again because we have people who are steeped in impunity and who know that, even at the end of 50 or 60 facts, they are still outside. It is no longer possible ", insists Patrice Ribeiro.

The police unions will be received Monday evening by Prime Minister Jean Castex in Matignon.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin will also be present.
