Establishing a so-called biosphere reserve is a way of both protecting nature and creating conditions for different interests to coexist within a limited area.

There are currently seven biosphere reserves in the country.

One of them is Vattenriket in Kristianstad, which was transformed from an area with a landfill and a heavily polluted river, into a protected nature area with a rich bird life.

Could the establishment of a biosphere reserve also be a solution for the Jämtland mountains, to reduce the wear and tear of nature and the conflicts between different interests and industries?

In the clip above, Johanna MacTaggart, the national coordinator for the Swedish Biosphere Program, answers that question.

A basic condition, however, is that there is a local commitment, she states.
