Faced with the arrival of new variants on the African continent, Tanzania unveils anti-Covid measures.

This country, where the word "coronavirus" was still taboo some time ago, this week announced new travel restrictions intended to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Admittedly, the Indian variant of the coronavirus is one of the main motivations for this decision, but it also marks a desire of the new president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, to stand out from her predecessor.

Samia Suluhu Hassan chooses caution.

The new president of Tanzania this week banned all flights to and from India where a variant of Covid-19 has plunged the country into a serious health crisis.

This variant is now circulating in three African countries including neighboring Uganda and Kenya.

To avoid any importation of this variant, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health has announced tighter controls for travelers from countries at risk, with a mandatory 14-day quarantine, at their expense.

For President Hassan, there is no question of taking risks.

Any traveler arriving in Tanzania will also have to present a negative test dating back less than 72 hours, before returning to the territory.

A break with the Magufuli approach.

He who had never ceased to minimize the virus and to affirm that his country had been freed from it thanks to prayers, let thousands of tourists come to the Zanzibar archipelago, without tests or isolation.

The one Tanzanians nicknamed the “Bulldozer” died at the end of March, officially of heart problems.

His opponents, them, believe that it was consequences of the Covid-19.
