Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt there will be a new catalog of fines against illegal waste disposal.

The new requirements created a uniform and transparent framework, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Environment.

Until now, the amount of the fine was left to the municipalities and cities.

Compared to other federal states, Saxony-Anhalt is taking tough action with the new fines. According to the new regulation, a discarded cigarette butt should result in a fine of between 20 and 40 euros. In neighboring Thuringia, the same offense costs between 10 and 30 euros under state law. In addition, the country estimates the illegal disposal of household garbage bags up to 400 euros. Washing machines illegally dumped in the forest can result in fines of up to 700 euros. It becomes particularly expensive with construction waste containing asbestos. Fines of up to 15,000 euros are outstanding here.

«Waste endangers people and nature.

Roadside waste and plastic waste on the paths are not a trivial offense, but serious environmental pollution, ”said Environment Minister Claudia Dalbert (Greens).

The illegal disposal of waste causes environmental and health damage as well as additional costs.

In Saxony-Anhalt alone, the municipalities would have to spend around one million euros annually to properly dispose of the illegally deposited waste.

These costs would be passed on to all citizens through higher waste fees.

According to the spokeswoman, the new catalog, as a state-wide regulation, also relieves the municipalities, which could henceforth orient themselves to the specifications.

The catalog comes into force with the publication of the ordinance in the ministerial gazette.

The exact time cannot yet be foreseen, said the spokeswoman.
