Stuttgart (AP) - Eight weeks after the state elections, the Greens and the CDU in Baden-Württemberg approved the coalition agreement for a new edition of their coalition at separate party congresses.

After the Greens, the delegates at a CDU party congress also voted for the agreement with a large majority.

This means that the Green Winfried Kretschmann can be elected Prime Minister for the third time on Wednesday.

Initially, the Greens approved the treaty - 188 delegates voted yes, 23 voted no, and 9 abstained.

Then the delegates of the CDU followed - with 209 votes in favor, 44 against, 11 abstentions.

Both party congresses took place virtually virtually.

Kretschmann and CDU country chief Thomas Strobl had previously campaigned for approval of the coalition agreement.

«This is the greenest coalition agreement of all time.

And by that I mean not just Baden-Württemberg, but the entire republic, ”said Kretschmann at the party conference in Stuttgart.

"This renewal contract is grass green, not because we gagged the CDU, but because the times demand it."

Strobl spoke of a "steep and rocky road" for the coalition negotiations. "The Greens appeared quite wide-legged and it wasn't always easy either." Coalition always means compromise. The CDU struggled intensely with the Greens, and it was very successful in anchoring many of the CDU's ideas. Strobl, who is Minister of the Interior in Baden-Württemberg, emphasized internal security and sustainability in financial policy. The CDU must now distinguish itself through good governance.

In the state elections in mid-March, the Greens in Baden-Württemberg had a historic victory, leaving their coalition partner the CDU 8.5 percentage points behind.

Before the coalition negotiations, the Greens had clearly opposed Kretschmann's wish to govern with the Union again.

Many in the party would have preferred to see a traffic light alliance with the SPD and FDP.
