A police raid turned into a massacre Thursday, May 6 in a favela in Rio de Janeiro.

At least 25 people were killed in the shootout between suspected drug traffickers and Brazilian police.

It is one of the bloodiest law enforcement operations in the region's history.

According to television footage, suspects targeted by the intervention in a favela tried to flee via rooftops when police arrived at the scene in armored vehicles, as helicopters flew over the area.

The shooting, which forced residents to barricade themselves, resulted in the death of a police officer and suspected members of the drug trafficking gang.

Others said they saw corpses lying in the middle of pools of blood in the alleys.
