London (AP) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has spoken out in favor of moving the Champions League final from Turkey to Great Britain.

The English football association FA had previously asked UEFA to do so.

“It would be great to be able to host it here if we can.

I want to help the supporters of both clubs to see their team in action, "Johnson told The Sun newspaper.

In the final on May 29, the Premier League clubs Chelsea FC and Manchester City face each other.

Because of the corona situation in Turkey, the British government has put the country on a “red list”.

Anyone who then enters the UK from Turkey must go to quarantine in a Corona hotel at their own expense.

In the evening, the European Football Union confirmed that it was aware that Turkey would be on the “red list”.

"We need some time to think about the issue," said UEFA when asked.

British Transport Minister Grant Shapps pointed out on Friday that games had already taken place in front of an audience in Great Britain.

"We are very open about where the final will be hosted, but ultimately it's a decision by UEFA."

The Chelsea Supporters' Trust fan association has announced that it will meet with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin to request a move.

The stadium of first division club Aston Villa in Birmingham was recently discussed as an alternative location.

However, just a few days ago, UEFA emphasized that it wanted to stick to Istanbul as the host city.
