“We call on the international community to take practical steps to protect the lives of innocent children,” RIA Novosti quoted Kuzmin as saying.

He recalled that "in accordance with international law, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, states are obliged to repatriate their citizens, as well as to take steps to ensure that the children of their citizens do not become stateless."

According to Kuzmin, the Russian authorities are actively involved in the return to their homeland of children from countries that are in a state of armed conflict.

In April, Anna Kuznetsova, the Children's Rights Commissioner under the President of Russia, arrived in Syria to negotiate and organize the removal of Russian children from camps located in the territory not controlled by Damascus.
