The current UN Secretary-General Guterres explained his vision for the second five-year term to member states on May 7th, local time.

He said that he will respond to the multiple challenges of today's world with humility and focus on finding solutions.

The UN General Assembly held an informal dialogue on the same day, and Guterres explained to the member states the issues related to his election to the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Informal dialogue is a link introduced by the UN General Assembly in the last selection process of the Secretary-General to allow candidates to express their views and answer questions raised by representatives of all walks of life, including civil society.

After the informal dialogue, the Security Council will begin its selection process in June.

If there are other candidates, further dialogue may be held.

According to the "United Nations Charter", the Security Council proposes a candidate for the Secretary-General to the General Assembly.

The General Assembly will then pass a resolution to formally appoint the Secretary-General.

Guterres, 72, officially took office as the 9th UN Secretary-General in January 2017.

Currently, he is the only official candidate for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, nominated by the Portuguese government.

Guterres was the Prime Minister of Portugal and the High Commissioner of the United Nations Refugee Agency.
