Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - Long-time NHL defender Korbinian Holzer will strengthen Adler Mannheim in the future.

The national player signed a two-year contract and should play a leading role in the German ice hockey champions of 2019, as the Adler announced on Friday.

Holzer played a total of 211 games in the NHL between 2010 and 2020 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators.

Most recently, the 33-year-old defender played for Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the Continental Hockey League (KHL), which is dominated by Russian teams.

At the moment Holzer is preparing with the German national team in Nuremberg for the world championship from May 21 to June 6 in Riga.

"Korbinian is undoubtedly one of the best defenders that German ice hockey has produced," said Mannheim's sports manager Jan-Axel Alavaara, praising the native of Munich.

“Mannheimer Morgen” and “Ice Hockey News” had already reported on the upcoming transfer.

The Adler Mannheim were surprisingly eliminated this season as top favorites in the playoff semifinals of the German Ice Hockey League and are rebuilding their squad with eleven departures.
