Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringian CDU parliamentary group calls for more video surveillance in Thuringia's municipalities.

This could provide more security in public places that are classified as dangerous, said the CDU interior politician Raymond Walk on Friday in the state parliament in Erfurt.

He referred to good experiences in Altenburg or Sonneberg.

In some cities, Walk named Arnstadt and Suhl, thought is being given to selective video surveillance.

This could also have helped to prevent vandalism with massive damage to property, as recently in the city center of Jena.

Opposition came from several groups.

The CDU called on the state government to check whether more video surveillance technology could be used in public places classified as dangerous.

His group expects a nationwide concept for a clean implementation in terms of data protection law, said Walk.

Opposition came from the FDP, the Left and the Greens.

The FDP MP Robert-Martin Montag referred to encroachments on fundamental rights.

The Greens MP Madeleine Henfling feared that in the worst case scenario, movement profiles could be created by people.

In addition, the CDU failed with a similar application years ago.

The SPD domestic politician Dorothea Marx also expressed concerns. Video technology could at best help in retrospect to help identify the perpetrators, said Marx. "I see, however, that there is a need for regulation because many municipalities use or want to use this technology." The group leader of the Left, Steffen Dittes, said that the racist attack on a refugee recently in a tram in Erfurt had not been prevented by video cameras installed there. The CDU application is to be discussed further in the responsible state parliament committee.

In Thuringia, there were three places classified as permanently dangerous last year, all of which were in the state capital Erfurt.

The classification allows police officers to check people's personal details without a specific reason or suspicion.

Under certain conditions, bags can be checked, for example.
