Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Significantly more weapons requiring a permit and prohibited weapons were seized at Frankfurt Airport last year than in the previous year.

As can be seen from the annual balance sheet presented by the main customs office in Frankfurt on Friday, the number has more than doubled from just under 3,400 to over 8,000 weapons.

According to the announcement, the prohibited weapons were mostly ordered via the Internet.

In addition, almost 1,300 live animals that fall under species protection were seized - especially turtles, ornamental fish, corals and snakes were affected.
