Flensburg (dpa / lno) - Experts from the ordnance disposal service want to render a dud from the Second World War harmless in Flensburg today.

The bomb had been discovered during construction work on the sports field Eckenerstraße.

According to the city, more than 16,500 people around the site within a radius of 1000 meters to the north and 500 meters to the south have to leave their homes.

The evacuation is scheduled to begin at 9.30 a.m.

All apartments in the protected area must be vacated by 11.30 a.m.

The St. Franziskus Hospital in Malta is also located in the area to be evacuated.

The hospital said that patients would need to be moved to other areas for the disarming period.

In addition, panels are installed in front of the windows of the rooms, which are parallel to Waldstrasse.

Emergency shelters will be provided for those affected during the defusing period.

If everything goes according to plan, the closure can be expected to be lifted in the late afternoon / early evening.
