Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani expressed his welcome to the resumption of relations between Kenya and Somalia, expressing his thanks to the presidents of the two countries for their political will to restore relations.

The Qatari minister said - in an interview with Al Jazeera - that his country will follow this development in the relationship, "and if there is a need for intervention, we will welcome continued support for these efforts."

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani called for the continuation of normal relations between the two countries, and urged all parties "to intensify communication." He said that tension on the Somali-Kenyan border was one of the reasons for severing relations, and that "the two parties have the political will to resolve this tension."

In the same context, the Qatari minister encouraged holding Somali elections on the date agreed upon between the political parties.

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomed the announcement of Somalia and Kenya to resume full diplomatic relations between them, and the Foreign Ministry expressed its hope that this step would bring good and prosperity to the peoples of the two friendly republics.

The Foreign Ministry added, in a statement published on Twitter, that the State of Qatar affirms that it will spare no effort in achieving peace and stability and building bridges through mediation, activating diplomatic channels and bridging views, which will enhance international peace and stability.

Earlier, the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, congratulated the Somali and Kenyan Presidents for what he described as their wise and courageous decision to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Sheikh Tamim received two phone calls from the Somali Presidents Muhammad Abdullah Farjamo and Kenyan Uhuru Kenyatta, and both presidents thanked the Emir of the State of Qatar for his country's efforts and efforts to heal the rift between their countries.

On Thursday, the Somali Ministry of Information announced the restoration of diplomatic relations between Kenya and Somalia, after they were interrupted for 5 months after Mogadishu accused Nairobi of interfering in its internal affairs.

In a press conference in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, Abd al-Rahman Yusuf, the Somali Deputy Minister of Information, said that relations between Nairobi and Mogadishu had returned thanks to Qatari efforts, and the Somali official thanked the Emir of the State of Qatar for his efforts to restore relations between the two African countries.
