Altentreptow (dpa / mv) - In Altentreptow near Neubrandenburg, the lifting of the so-called "Great Stone" will continue on Friday.

Workers want to use hydraulic presses to raise the natural monument, which weighs around 400 tons, by almost three meters so that the colossus can be seen in full as a visitor magnet in the future.

The granite boulder is about eight meters long, five meters high and so far half of it has sunk into the ground.

After three years of preparation, it was raised by about two meters by a special steel construction on Thursday by evening.

According to Karsten Schütze from the Geological State Office of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the "Great Stone" Altentreptow is the second largest boulder of the northern ice ages on the German mainland.

In first place, with an estimated weight of 470 tons, is the “Kleine Markgrafenstein” south of Berlin.

The lifting action, which only goes forward by the millimeter, should cost around 260,000 euros and be completed by Friday afternoon.
