07 May 2021 The presidium of the workers of the CGIL CISL and UIL trade unions in Prato has just begun, organized following the accident at work that on Monday cost the life of Luana D'Orazio, a 22-year-old worker dragged into the gears of the warper in which she was employed in the 'Luana' firm of Oste di Montemurlo. The demonstration was organized in conjunction with the four-hour general strike proclaimed by the unions. Hundreds with flags and placards poured into the square this morning to express solidarity with the D'Orazio family and to call for greater safety at work.

On the Emperor's Castle, which dominates Piazza Santa Maria delle Carceri, seat of the garrison, stands a banner with the inscription 'Dying from work today is not only inconceivable, it is intolerable'. On stage, the three provincial secretaries of the confederal unions who promoted the event and six workers enrolled in the unions, some of whom come from the textile sector. Texprint workers on strike, Pakistani employees who have been protesting for months, registered with Si Cobas, will also be present.

The unions underline the difficulty of supervising the textile district with 48 prevention technicians to control about 30,000 companies operating in the area. In the square to send a signal of support also the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, the mayor of Prato, Matteo Biffoni and the mayor of Montemurlo, Simone Calamai.

Labor Minister Andrea Orlando is also expected in the afternoon, who has convened a summit in the prefecture on safety at work and to whom Calamai intends to ask for "a decisive commitment from the government" on these issues. The mayor of Prato and the regional councilors for health and work, Bezzini and Nardini will also participate in the meeting.
