Bad Ems (dpa / lrs) - In the past year, so few foreigners living in Rhineland-Palatinate were naturalized as not for more than three decades.

4841 people received German citizenship, as the State Statistical Office in Bad Ems announced on Friday.

That is the lowest value since 1989. Compared to 2019, the number of naturalizations fell by about a fifth (minus 20.2 percent).

The State Statistical Office attributes this to the consequences of the restrictions to contain the corona pandemic.

According to the state office, 2531 women and 2310 men were naturalized in 2020.

Around half of these people had lived in Germany for more than ten years (49.6 percent).

On average, the naturalized were 33 years old.

According to the information, the list of the most frequently naturalized nationalities was topped by people with Syrian citizenship (440 people).

In second place were people with previous Turkish citizenship (412).

According to the State Office, most of the naturalization certificates were issued in Ludwigshafen (596) and Mainz (485), and very few in the Kusel district (23).
