Wiesbaden / Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - During the inspection of imported ornamental plants at Frankfurt Airport, no cases of genetic engineering have recently been discovered.

"This year 219 cuttings of begonias, magic bells, chrysanthemums, orchids, pelargoniums and petunias were analyzed and fortunately they were not genetically modified," said the Hessian Environment Minister Priska Hinz (Greens) in Wiesbaden on Friday.

There are experiments with genetic engineering methods on numerous ornamental plant species to breed new flower colors and shapes.

Since ornamental plants do not have a batch number like agricultural seeds, it is hardly possible to trace the individual batches when they are delivered to nurseries and plant markets.
