Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) -The North Rhine-Westphalian SPD chairman Thomas Kutschaty calls for the anniversary of the end of the war (May 8, 1945) to be made a national holiday.

"We have to make May 8 a day against racism, exclusion and discrimination in any form," said Kutschaty on Friday in Düsseldorf.

«76 years after humanity was liberated from the Nazi regime, right-wing violence is increasing, racism should be made socially acceptable and nationalists are back in our parliaments.

I think that's shameful and a mockery of the victims of the Second World War, ”said Kuchaty.

A holiday on “Liberation Day” strengthens the collective memory and promotes the fight against extremism.
