Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Since the corona mask requirement began a good year ago, the Rhineland-Palatinate police have registered around 16,100 violations of the obligation to wear a mouth and nose cover.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, this number (as of the end of April) does not include the violations identified by the regulatory authorities in the individual municipalities without the involvement of the police.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the vast majority of the approximately 4.1 million Rhineland-Palatinate residents comply with the rules. This applies both to wearing a mouth and nose cover and to the other corona restrictions. "Although on the weekends and when the weather is good, there are sometimes many citizens in the popular local recreation areas and excursion destinations, there are usually no increased violations of the restrictions to be found," said spokeswoman Sonja Bräuer.

The number of violations fluctuates depending on the total number of people encountered and checked and the tightened or relaxed requirements of the Corona Control Ordinance, she explained.

A tendency for people to more or less adhere to the requirements in the course of the ongoing pandemic cannot be read from the data.

Even in the public talks, the population mostly shows a positive attitude towards the control measures of the police and regulatory authorities.

Nevertheless, the visible presence of the police and regulatory authorities, especially in the larger cities, should also help ensure that the rules are adhered to, said Bräuer.

"Control measures therefore continue to play an important role in fighting the pandemic," she emphasized.

While mouth and nose covers were sometimes in short supply when the mask requirement was introduced a good year ago, the situation has eased significantly since then, as the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Supply (LSJV) announced. "High quality material that meets European requirements" is now available in sufficient quantities. At the beginning of the year there were reports of tens of thousands of FFP2 masks being recalled due to quality doubts. Counterfeits have also become known. This topic is not yet completely off the table. Reports on product warnings will continue to be monitored and evaluated, said the state office.

According to the information, the state supplies the districts and cities and their affiliated institutions such as health authorities if necessary.

It also supplies the test centers operated by the municipalities and aid organizations, the vaccination centers and state agencies with masks and other materials.

According to the LSJV, the school supervision of the Supervision and Service Directorate (ADD) provides all employees of the Rhineland-Palatinate schools with FFP2 masks and surgical masks or with medical face masks.

"For this, the schools can enter their requirements online in a request tool every month and have the masks delivered directly to the school," said a spokeswoman.

In order to avoid renewed bottlenecks in future crisis situations, the state is creating reserves for emergency preparedness, according to the office.

"In accordance with the Rhineland-Palatinate pandemic plan, all health care institutions are responsible for preparing for any crisis situations," said the state office.

The country's current reserves complemented these procurements.
