Munich (dpa / lby) - For almost 109,000 fourth graders in Bavaria it is now clear what options there are: With their transfer certificate, they have received the recommendation for the secondary school type.

This is largely binding in Bavaria and is based on the average grades of the three core subjects math, German as well as home and general studies.

Because of the corona pandemic, most fourth graders are currently in alternating lessons with shared classes and usually only come to school every other day.

Many of them were given the transfer certificate on Thursday, the others received it on Friday.

In individual cases, the certificate will also be sent to your home by post.

In those cases in which the teachers have not yet succeeded in creating valid grades, there is still a one-week extension period.

On Friday next week, however, all transfer recommendations must be in place.

In Bavaria, around 40 percent of fourth graders have switched to a grammar school in recent years, the remainder was relatively evenly distributed between secondary and middle school.

For the secondary school, the fourth graders must have achieved at least an average of 2.66 in the three core subjects, for the grammar school a 2.33 is required.

If a child does not achieve this level, there is still the option of a three-day trial lesson with exams in math and German.

The relatively rigid procedure is even more controversial than ever in Corona times.

Critics complain that the prerequisites for distance and alternating teaching differed from region to region, from school to school, and even within a class, and were therefore neither comparable nor fair.

Proponents see it as a tried and tested instrument that works even in times of crisis, in order to distribute the pupils to the secondary school types according to their suitability.
