Tuesday, two people were arrested and taken into custody after the fire in a nursery school in a popular district of Lille, we learned on Wednesday from the prosecution.

"As a result of the investigations which are still ongoing, two individuals, including a minor, were arrested and placed in police custody," said the Lille prosecutor's office.

A criminal investigation was opened for destruction by fire after these facts which "incur the perpetrators of 10 years imprisonment and 150,000 euros", said the prosecutor of the Republic of Lille, Carole Etienne, the day after the events.

A fire "caused" according to the police

The fire, which took place on April 22, "was caused" according to a police source.

This same source specifies that "the perpetrator (s) entered from the back of the building by breaking a window, set fire to a classroom which spread to the dormitory".

According to Élise Valembois, lieutenant with the firefighters, the emergency services were victims on the way "of mortar fire, which did not injure or affect our vehicles and did not increase the response time".

A "delusional act"

The day after the fire, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin went to the fire station requested to reaffirm his desire to step up the fight against drug trafficking, stressing that "the Republic will not be intimidated" .

The socialist mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, for her part denounced a "delusional act".

“We embarrass the traffickers.

So they respond, by attacking the Republic in what is most symbolic, the school, ”she said.
