Hanover (dpa / lni) - Marienburg Castle south of Hanover is to become the “Neuschwanstein of the North” according to the words of Lower Saxony's Minister of Culture Björn Thümler (CDU). A cooperation agreement has been signed as a step on the way. Among other things, it stipulates that students from the University of Applied Science and Art (HAWK) should help to record the inventory of the neo-Gothic Guelph residence. In addition, the 143 paintings bought by the state for almost two million euros are to be examined and, if necessary, restored in a show workshop.

Ernst August von Hannover (37) brought the castle and a large part of its furnishings into the Marienburg Castle Foundation at the beginning of 2020. "My goal has always been to enable a good future for the Marienburg and to make it and its inventory accessible to as many art and history lovers as possible," the Guelph Prince explained. He is the chairman of the foundation, but was not present when the contract was signed.

Originally, the 37-year-old wanted to sell the ailing Marienburg to the public sector for one euro. After his father's objection, the foundation solution was found.

Ernst August von Hannover senior wants the castle that his son had been given back and has already filed a lawsuit with the Hanover regional court.

This lawsuit has no effect on the activities of the foundation, stressed its managing director Alexandra Wenck.

The state and federal government have already committed 13.5 million euros each for the renovation of the ailing monument.

"The foundation is in the process of preparing the necessary documents as to how the renovation will proceed," said Minister Thümler.

He assumes that the preliminary planning will be completed in summer.

The operator of the castle museum and gastronomy, Nicolaus von Schöning, hopes to open soon after months of corona-related closure.

"We assume that we can offer a lot this summer," he said.
