Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian building minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) has spoken out in favor of Interior Minister Herbert Reul as the new CDU boss in North Rhine-Westphalia.

«As the successor to Armin Laschet, we should elect a party leader who has broad support.

I am of the opinion that Herbert Reul is the right candidate in the current situation, ”said Scharrenbach to the“ Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger ”(Friday edition).

Scharrenbach has so far been considered a potential candidate for the party chairmanship - as has her cabinet colleague, Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU).

The Junge Union had recently spoken out in favor of him.

According to "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger", Scharrenbach said with reference to Wüst: "I think we won't help our party with it if we get restless now."

A successor to Laschet must continue his style of bringing people together: "A course that relies on confrontation has never helped the CDU."

Reul, on the other hand, has "an excellent record" as Minister of the Interior.

"The high level of trust that people put in him would give the NRW-CDU a lot of tailwind in the federal election campaign and on the way to the state elections," said Scharrenbach.

Scharrenbach left it open whether the election for the party chairmanship was a preliminary decision for the top candidacy in the state elections in 2022.

It is also “a conceivable alternative” that a woman could lead the CDU into the race, Scharrenbach told the “Stadt-Anzeiger”.
