Düsseldorf (dpa) - The armaments company and auto supplier Rheinmetall earned significantly more on balance thanks to good business and savings in the first quarter.

Earnings after taxes more than tripled compared to the same period of the previous year and climbed to 58 million euros, as the MDax Group announced on Thursday in Düsseldorf when it presented detailed figures.

CEO Armin Papperger was satisfied with the start of the year.

"We are benefiting from the significant recovery in the automotive industry, from the armed forces' ongoing procurement needs and from our high cost discipline."

As already known, Rheinmetall was able to increase revenues in the first quarter of the year by around 3.5 percent to a good 1.4 billion euros.

The operating result was more than doubled to 87 million euros.
