Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Roger Lewentz has been re-elected as state chairman of the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate.

He got 89 percent of the valid votes at the digital party conference on Thursday evening in Mainz.

In the last election in 2018, he had received 93.0 percent.

The 58-year-old has been head of the Social Democrats since 2012.

The result still has to be confirmed in a postal vote.

Lewentz has also been Minister of the Interior and Sport since 2011.

He is to take on this task again in the next electoral term.

He began his political career in 1989 in the district council, was mayor of his home town Kamp-Bornhofen (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis) for many years and was a member of the state parliament for the first time in 1994.
