Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Roger Lewentz (SPD) has asked the Federal Ministry of Defense for details of the plans for a structural reform of the Bundeswehr.

The medical service command in Koblenz, the regional medical service support command in Diez and the Rennerod medical center are of great importance for Rhineland-Palatinate, wrote Lewentz on Thursday in a letter to Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) available to the German press agency.

He would be grateful if Kramp-Karrenbauer could concretize their plans to the state government.

In principle, the Ministry of Defense wants to use the plans to significantly increase the operational capability of the Bundeswehr. According to information from the German Press Agency, there will in future be a central command for foreign and domestic operations. The plans also envisage reorganizing the troops, which currently number around 185,000 men and women, from six to four pillars - so-called military organizational areas: the army as a land force as well as the navy, air force and the recently created cyber and information force CIR. Among other things, the medical service would be significantly rebuilt and would no longer be a separate organizational area.

Lewentz went on to write in the letter: "I can currently see considerable unrest in the Bundeswehr on site and in the local communities, and I share the concerns that have been presented to me."

Against the background of the corona pandemic, the medical services and the armed forces base are reliable and resilient partners for federal states, municipalities and all health facilities.
