Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has been awarded the European Craft Prize.

Laschet received the award given by the NRW craft organizations for his commitment “for a Europe of diversity, competitiveness, sustainability and partnership relationships between Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia and their neighbors,” said a statement on Thursday.

The prize will be presented to the Union Chancellor candidate and CDU federal chairman next Monday in Cologne City Hall by Mayor Henriette Reker and top representatives of the trade.

The award ceremony had to be postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic and will now be rescheduled as a digital event without guests present on site.

The award is given to personalities in international public life who have made a special contribution to the craft and medium-sized businesses.

Previous winners have included the Federal Presidents Joachim Gauck, Roman Herzog and Johannes Rau as well as the former Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the former EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker.
