Berlin (dpa) - North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has pointed out the role of universities as open places for ideas and opinions.

The CDU federal chairman said on Thursday in Berlin at a digital science evening to mark the 150th anniversary of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen that he would like an openness to new ideas, different perspectives and fresh approaches in many areas to return to the discussion.

Laschet also said that the corona pandemic had made it painfully clear where digitization was still missing in Germany.

In many areas, especially in education and health care, we had to catch up.

The situation at the universities is a little better.

The university in Aachen started doing it early.

In a brief greeting, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) pointed out that the universities were supported by the federal government with five billion euros annually in addition to funding from the federal states.

"Our universities are proving to be drivers of innovation for their region and the whole country," said the Chancellor.

This can also be seen in the example of Aachen.

RWTH, today the largest technical university in Germany with around 45,000 students, was founded in October 1870.

Laschet said of the university in his hometown that it is one of the leading universities for innovative research in Germany.

RWTH has been one of the universities of excellence in Germany since 2007.
