Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Hesse's Environment Minister Priska Hinz (Greens) is committed to a more consumer-friendly use of e-bikes.

The trend in the population towards more e-bikes is good for the climate, as the use of bicycles means that the car is left behind more often, said Hinz of the German press agency in Wiesbaden.

But there is also a catch when buying e-bikes, as the batteries are permanently installed on many models and their performance quickly deteriorates.

"This means that the bike has to be repaired at great expense after a short time."

"If spare parts or even completely new bikes are bought all the time, it is also an unnecessary waste of resources that is of no benefit to climate protection," said the Green politician.

The longevity of the wheels, their repairability, the availability of spare parts and the replacement of the battery should therefore be regulated by law.

The EU is planning to use its battery regulation to promote the longevity of devices by making them easy to remove and replace, reported Hinz.

So far, however, the e-bikes have not been included in the draft ordinance.

"That is why we call on the federal government to advocate a corresponding regulation for e-bikes in the interests of consumer protection and climate protection."

At the consumer protection ministers' conference, which will be held until Friday, she will submit an application.
