Lorup (dpa / lni) - The highly contagious avian influenza cannot be brought under control in Lower Saxony.

On Thursday, three more outbreaks were confirmed in a turkey farm with a total of almost 20,000 animals in the Lorup community in the Emsland district.

The animals are killed.

The pathogen is considered to be harmless to humans.

Above all, the high economic damage is feared.

From May 1st, a restricted area was set up within a three-kilometer radius and an observation area within a ten-kilometer radius. This area is now being expanded. In the restricted area, 59 commercial businesses with around 1.53 million poultry and 27 hobby businesses with around 815 poultry are still affected. In the observation area there are 131 commercial operations with around 3.9 million poultry and 185 hobby holdings with over 3,000 poultry, as the message further said. Any transport of live poultry and eggs is prohibited.

In the past few months there have been numerous outbreaks in poultry fattening farms in Lower Saxony.

In March, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that around one million animals had been affected so far.

In Emsland and other districts, poultry are compulsory.

In the district of Nienburg, on the other hand, poultry can be kept outdoors again from May 1st.
