Berlin / Kiel (dpa / lno) - According to the insurers, the number of bicycle thefts in Schleswig-Holstein decreased in the past year.

10 245 stolen bicycles were 9 percent less than in 2019, as the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) announced on Thursday.

With 353 stolen bicycles per 100,000 available, the northernmost state was above the national average of 314.

GDV managing director Jörg Asmussen attributed the decline to the corona pandemic.

"Because of Corona, many people stayed at home."

The bicycles were rarely left unattended outside.

"This means that fewer opportunities for theft have opened up."

According to police crime statistics, around 260,000 bicycles were stolen nationwide in 2020, around 5,000 fewer than in the previous year.

The average compensation for the 145,000 stolen and insured bicycles rose from 720 to 730 euros.

"The success of the e-bikes is likely to increase the amount of damage further," predicted Asmussen.
