Hanover (AP) - The spring meeting of the church parliament of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) began on Thursday evening with a service in the Herrenhausen Church in Hanover.

The focus of the Synod session is on the election of a new President to head Parliament for the next six years.

The FDP politician Irmgard Schwaetzer (79), who has held the top position since November 2013, is no longer available for a new term of office.

The election will take place on Saturday.

Candidates are presented by a nomination committee on the day itself.

In addition, the new church parliament is constituted at the conference with its 128 synodals, who come from the 20 regional Protestant churches in Germany.

Because of the corona epidemic, the service was broadcast digitally.

The synod conference is also organized online.

The impact of the wave of infection on the work of the Church will also be a topic at the conference.

“Living faith, worship and pandemic” is a theme evening on Friday.
