Cologne (dpa) - The Dutchman Hein Mulders has been officially appointed as the new opera director.

The city council decided on Thursday.

Previously, on April 12, the city's main committee had already decided in favor of the 58-year-old, who had been selected by a selection committee.

Mulders will take office on September 1, 2022.

In Essen he is currently responsible for the Aalto Music Theater, Essen Philharmonic and Philharmonic Essen divisions.

Cologne's Lord Mayor Henriette Reker was very satisfied.

Mulders will play a «decisive role in the future of the art and culture metropolis of Cologne», she predicted.

The Cologne Opera has been in an alternate quarter for years, and it is not until the 2024/25 season that it will return to its renovated main building from the 1950s.
