Dresden (dpa / sn) - The German Red Cross (DRK) in Saxony is changing its system for assigning vaccination appointments from this Friday.

Due to the stable amount of vaccine, in the future tens of thousands will no longer be given all at once, but fewer appointments.

This should enable people in different situations to get a vaccination appointment, said a DRK spokesman on Thursday upon request.

It starts on Friday from 8 a.m. on the booking portal with 5000 new vaccination appointments for the period from May 17th to 19th.

DRK boss Rüdiger Unger had previously announced that in future new vaccination appointments could be booked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. By May 17, around 25,000 vaccination appointments are to be allocated to the vaccination centers in this way. According to the DRK, 446,000 vaccinations have already been planned or given for May.

So far, the DRK, which regulates the allocation of the vaccine for the Free State, has always activated thousands of appointments about every ten days.

Most recently, according to Unger, there were around 70,000 appointments that were allocated within 30 hours.

The DRK boss called for the online portal to be used when making bookings.

The call center's resources are manageable.

The hotline lasted between 70,000 and 80,000 calls every day, but the hotline could only take a maximum of 10,000 calls.

If no one is available there for hours, that leads to displeasure, said Unger.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, more than 1.5 million vaccine doses have been administered in Saxony so far - around 456,000 people are considered fully vaccinated.

With a quota of 11.2 percent, the Free State ranks second nationwide in terms of the number of fully vaccinated people.
