Braunschweig (dpa / lni) - The German athletics championships from June 4th to 6th in Braunschweig will take place without spectators because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As in 2019, the competitions are part of the “Finals 2021” with a total of 18 German championships from Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia.

"In Corona times you can live with being the branch of the finals," said Annett Stein, the head coach of the German Athletics Association, at a digital press conference on Thursday.

Before Corona, the athletes with their competitions in Berlin were still the focus of great interest in the finals.

In Braunschweig, the title fights are this time the most important stage for the German athletes on the way to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"I expect very high-performance competitions," said Stein.

"We have upper limits on the number of participants and very high standards, but we have one goal: We want to award Olympic tickets."

With the nomination guidelines, the DLV created the prerequisites for this.

“The first places in each discipline with an already fulfilled standard almost buy their Olympic tickets on site.

They are primarily nominated by us, ”explained Stein.

“That is the incentive for many who have already been able to meet their standards over the long nomination period.

They want to put themselves in a safe position for the Olympic Games in the title fights. "
